What is a doula?
A doula is a professional labor support. The word doula is from the Greek meaning woman who serves. The role of doula is completely focused on serving the laboring mother's needs. Doctors, nurses, and midwives provide medical care for the baby and mother and a doula does not perform any clinical procedures on the mother. The partner provides unconditional love and is there to celebrate the birth, but the doula holds a vast amount of knowledge that a partner may not have about comfort measures and positions that help labor progress. A doula is also helpful when hard decisions must be made since there may be limited time and she can provide information about procedures you would not otherwise receive. My goal as a doula, is to help a birthing family achieve the birth experience they hope for and empower them in their new roles as parents.
