What if I plan on having an epidural or cesarean section?

Many people equate doulas with natural birth or home-births, and while many doulas prefer natural birth because of benefits to mother and baby, most attend births in a wide array of settings and circumstances. Doulas can offer support and comfort measures even when there are planned interventions. As your doula, I meet with you for Prenatal Visits so that I may discuss and understand your preferences for birth which may include an induction, epidural, or surgical birth. When the big day arrives, I can help in your birth experience with comfort measures before the epidural or surgery. In the case of an induction, a doula can be especially helpful in avoiding further interventions that aren't planned. As your doula, I will never speak for your but may help you decide what you want to say and support you as you discuss your concerns with your medical care providers. You will always have the final say about what happens to you at your birth.
