How does a doula interact with hospital staff?
Many people equate doulas with natural birth or home-births, and while many doulas prefer natural birth because of benefits to mother and baby, most attend births in a wide array of settings and circumstances. Doulas will interact with hospital staff only as a facilitator of discussion between you and your care providers. They do not make medical decisions for you or discuss your medical information without your consent. As your doula, I meet with you for Prenatal Visits so that I may discuss and understand your preferences for birth. When the big day arrives, I can remind you and your care providers of the details we discussed at our Prenatal Visits. As your doula, I will never speak for your but may help you decide what you want to say and support you as you discuss your concerns with your medical care providers. You will always have the final say about what happens to you at your birth.
